Within the forensic science community much effort is taken to develop better standards and best practice guides for the different fields of forensic science. Also several ISO-standards are available or in development .</div>

<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.7); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Currently much effort is conducted for forensic analysis directly at the crime scene, so the results are faster available. In the digital forensic field we see that much effort is taken to approach the data, though it is getting more complicated due to strong encryption due to privacy concerns of users. However, often solutions are found with hard work.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.7); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The use of databases of traces is progressing. Many databases exists for example for bio-metrics, such as DNA, fingerprints, speakers, faces and many other traces in forensic areas. The use of these databases should be expanded to other areas in forensic science, since this is important for providing statistical information, and also artificial intelligence algorithms can be trained by using these. Also I see that we need some algorithms for finding errors in forensic reports as well as court cases in order to improve forensic finding of future reports. For this reason also forensic data science is a field that is expanding rapidly and also many projects work on improving databases and knowledge in forensic science.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.7); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I look forward to much good progress within the forensic community and also hope on much collaboration, since we need to collaborate to solve the many challenges in forensic science.</div>

The wide range of aspects a forensic scientist should handle, makes it for me a wide range of opportunities. The idea is to use the data and databases that exist useful for forensic interpretation and in the end use as evidence in court. In August I gave at the <a href="http://iafstoronto2017.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" style="background: 0px 0px transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #827be9; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">IAFS in Toronto</a> a talk on deep learning and forensic evidence. To prepare data often scripting language such as Python is used, and we see lot of open source solutions being developed. Knowledge of databases i, and the handling of multimodal data is important. Also heterogeneous data as well as the veracity and validity of data is to consider.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.7); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The Netherlands Forensic Institute for me is a very nice place since I had my 25th year of celebration here and the organization is always changing in novel directions and giving new opportunities to learn and improve forensic science.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.7); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Since I work at the NFI and as a professor Forensic Data Science the University of Amsterdam, I also have several research projects (also for students) that work on digital evidence, as well as multimedia analysis. Also within European Horizon 2020 projects <a href="https://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj-gJ-7wLvWAhWEZlAKHeUHBIgQFghGMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fcordis.europa.eu%2Fproject%2Frcn%2F203297_en.html&usg=AFQjCNFKQGc7BZBZOnqQ76pB7TyBgELvdg" rel="nofollow noopener" style="background: 0px 0px transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #827be9; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">ASGARD</a> and Marie Curie <a href="http://www.rug.nl/rechten/news/archief/2016/3.75-miljoen-eu-subsidie-voor-opleiding-15-security-experts?lang=en" rel="nofollow noopener" style="background: 0px 0px transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #827be9; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">ESSENTIAL</a> I am working on these topics combined with big data. International collaboration is important to optimize the solutions and prevent double work.</div>

Also sensors of a s<a href="http://www.computerworld.com/article/3193209/car-tech/your-car-will-eventually-live-stream-video-of-your-driving-to-the-cloud.html">elf driving car</a> could make 100 Gigabytes per second and suppose only a fraction is send to the cloud, then we have huge amounts of data that can be analyzed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijfHwTpRizBhoyy_UBVB4zj0QLDrnABjlZackeVTdYUZn2gnJtJ7TYRYJCcGZJz_GN9ZOVjnTpMPMlN1tusRJyYChJjGjqMil_upgMVFhu9ckoMy-nAKd3z12hd9GGC8yNOWPwyA/s1600/IMG_20170304_153039.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijfHwTpRizBhoyy_UBVB4zj0QLDrnABjlZackeVTdYUZn2gnJtJ7TYRYJCcGZJz_GN9ZOVjnTpMPMlN1tusRJyYChJjGjqMil_upgMVFhu9ckoMy-nAKd3z12hd9GGC8yNOWPwyA/s320/IMG_20170304_153039.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When this has to be analyzed we need fast methods for selection of relevant data. For humans it would not be feasible to process these amounts of data manually, so machine learning is one of the options to solve this. As chair of forensic data science at the Institute for Informatics of the University of Amsterdam this is one of the topics of research. Also combined with Biometrics where the privacy protection are top priority this makes new solutions possible for law enforcement.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1-Ee_OABsEOcmB9DjP1L5rJ3f52MdJZsjrVurmqrYczf_9tP6hyphenhyphenkYRGZNKKRJBjL10mADE2-chogUN_tewt3OgkYjcqvAlaTC8E04laJGIULoGqTleqorT2wgttgPwHUYxQFcFg/s1600/download.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1-Ee_OABsEOcmB9DjP1L5rJ3f52MdJZsjrVurmqrYczf_9tP6hyphenhyphenkYRGZNKKRJBjL10mADE2-chogUN_tewt3OgkYjcqvAlaTC8E04laJGIULoGqTleqorT2wgttgPwHUYxQFcFg/s1600/download.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It is also expected that more relevant statistical information is deducted from the data. However as always most of the data is heterogeneous and might be contaminated, so before drawing conclusion one should know a measure of uncertainty of the data.<br />
<br />
One of the issues with deep learning is that part of it is a black box, and methods to explain how the network learns from the training sets are <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/can-we-open-the-black-box-of-ai-1.20731">under development</a>. However at the other side the human brain of an expert can also be seen as a <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/03/brainlike-computers-are-black-box-scientists-are-finally-peering-inside">black box</a>, since by visual comparison the expert also uses previous experiences and is sensitive to bias. <a href="http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7568915/?reload=true">Research</a> in this field is conducted and should also provide solutions to cope with this bias within forensic science.<br />

In November I was the second reader of the PhD defense of the thesis of Michael Gruhn at the FAU University in Erlangen on rootkit and anti forensics software and how this can impact forensic science.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In December I was one of the promotors of the PhD defense of the <a href="http://dare.uva.nl/search?identifier=447f10ad-cecf-4b95-9f8b-7cb97e84eac0" rel="nofollow noopener" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #8c68cb; cursor: pointer; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">thesis</a> of Paul Duyn on criminal networks and a data driven approach on the different criminal networks as a complex adaptive system at the University of Amsterdam.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The combination of both approaches might even give more new insights, and nowadays there appears to be a growing interest in forensic data science since new approaches can be developed for preventing crimes from happening and examining crimes after they were committed. A multi-disciplinary approach is important to learn from each other fields and work on new solutions for example on cybercrime or any new crime that is developing. Even if antiforensics solutions have been used, possibilities exist to find forensic relevant information that can be used in court.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I look forward to many new multidisciplinary approaches, for example one of the approaches on forensic big data analysis is with the consortium <a href="http://www.essentialresearch.eu/" rel="nofollow noopener" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: #8c68cb; cursor: pointer; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">Essential</a>, were 15 PhD positions are available that will work on a range of topics within information policy and law.</div>

One of the issues of the data in the databases should be that they should be relied on and that the ground truth is known. Often the cleaning of data is necessary and the process should be followed according to strict rules to keep the integrity.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Nowadays we also see databases such as <a href="http://23andme.com/">23andme.com</a> where the public can receive their genome data and in the Netherlands they even allow you to give you the inherited conditions, drug response, genetic risk factors and traits for informational purposes for 160 euro. In the United States this is not allowed anymore, since the FDA said the results are not validated. <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/23andme-is-terrifying-but-not-for-the-reasons-the-fda-thinks/">http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/23andme-is-terrifying-but-not-for-the-reasons-the-fda-thinks/</a> However of course it is interesting the privacy aspects are more an issue as was written in the Scientific American. These databases of over one million people is interesting for research (if permitted) though, however identities are not verified.<br />

Several students finished their thesis on forensic investigation of drones, image manipulation and searching with open source methods through big forensic face databases. This month I also have some work, as a chairman of the <a href="http://www.enfis.org/">ENFSI</a> Forensic IT Working group in London, which will have a meeting from 20-22 September. And as usual before August 1st, I also should submit my proposals for presentations and a workshop at the <a href="http://aafs.org/">American Academy of Forensic Sciences</a>.<br />

We will discuss in this blog three developments which help in speeding up the forensic investigation.<br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10586-016-0553-1">Mobile labs </a><br />
The development of labs on the crime scene is a challenging one. We can see several developments in DNA and chemistry to receive faster results after a crime has happened. Also in digital evidence we see several mobile solutions to collect the data from the crime scene. The lab-on-a-chip techniques are also contributing to faster results.<br />
<br />
2. <a href="http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/login.jsp?tp=&arnumber=7323000&url=http%3A%2F%2Fieeexplore.ieee.org%2Fxpls%2Fabs_all.jsp%3Farnumber%3D7323000">Big data</a><br />
By using big data and analyzing the results from the past, it might be possible to have profiles of certain crimes. They can help to make a selection of techniques that work best for finding evidence at the crime scene. Since often over hundred traces are collected from the crime scene, a selection has to be made which should be analysed within 48 hours and other later.<br />
<br />
3. <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S105348221500008X">Management of forensic labs</a><br />
By using the right management of a forensic lab, the analysis might be conducted more efficient. Also backlogs should be prevented by using Service Level Agreements. Methods such as Lean Six Sigma can help, however most important is to spend time to the Human Resources and look that they are not overloaded with work also to maintain quality assurance as well.<br />
<br />
The working group of <a href="http://enfsi.eu/agenda/forensic-it-annual-meeting">ENFSI Forensic IT</a> will have a meeting in London from 20-22 September 2016. This working group will be focussed on digital forensic science, and topics include mobile forensics, forensic data science, forensic big data platforms, chip forensics and analysis of location data.<br />

During the conference of <a href="https://www.dfrws.org/2016eu/" rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #8c68cb; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Digital Forensic Research Workshop EU</a> in Lausanne several topics were important. A wide range of new developments was published in the <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/17422876/16/supp/S" rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #8c68cb; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">proceedings</a>. During the keynote talks also attention was given to the issues with decryption of smart phones and several solutions were brought to attention, as well as the paradox that exists between security and digital evidence. Other solutions and issues were brought forward on collecting data from the cloud as digital evidence, as well as issues with time stamps that might occur.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #232629; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
A nice panel discussion on the different aspects of using Bayes and likelihood ratios provided different views on using it in digital evidence. Though one would not easily use this for dictionary attacks of passwords, it is used in interpretation of the evidence. The hypothesis of the defence and of the prosecutor should be clear however. And questions rise if the defence is able to provide a good hypothesis, since education and insights on different scenarios is needed. </div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #232629; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Also one topic of importance is that users of the reports should also understand the report and the conclusions drawn and interpret them correctly. In law systems with trained judged and prosecutors this might be easier then with a jury that is generally not trained in Bayes Theorem and the use of likelihood ratios. Some good guidelines of using this are provided by <a href="http://www.enfsi.eu/news/enfsi-guideline-evaluative-reporting-forensic-science" rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #8c68cb; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">ENFSI</a>.</div>

It was good to see that in England and Wales Forensic Science is attracting more attention of government and that now steps are made to improve the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/506652/54493_Cm_9217_Forensic_Science_Strategy_Accessible.pdf" rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #8c68cb; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">system</a>. Also the realization that we have to move from the lab to the crime scene with new mobile techniques to have "real time" results, will lead to changes in the system. However quality assurance remains vital in these new developments, and we see much progress is made with new standards.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #232629; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Last month at the AAFS (<a href="https://www.aafs.org/" rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #8c68cb; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">American Academy of Forensic Sciences</a>) it was good to see that the OSACs and the efforts on improving the quality of forensic science will be visible in new standards. Also the AAFS is a SDO for groups that were not handled by others. And moreover the standard will be freely available. During this meeting it was also good to see that the Brazilian Academy of Forensic Science, is now an affiliate member academy.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #232629; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the EU IAI meeting were I was at the Board of Directors meeting in Brussels, new developments were also seen. The meeting in October of the IAI at Interpol in Lyon will be very nice, and we will also handle digital evidence, face comparison and of course fingerprints during this fingerprints. The webinars also appear to be a great success.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #232629; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
And this month the <a href="http://www.dfrws.org/2016eu/" rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #8c68cb; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">DFRWS EU (Digital Forensic Research Workshop</a><a href="http://www.theiaieu.org/" rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #8c68cb; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"> )</a> in Lausanne will be held, so we also see a very nice program here with many new developments and good workshops. </div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #232629; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Also at the NFI, I had followed a very nice course by Reinoud Stoel on context effects, which are really applicable in practice. So we try to prevent the context effects within our cases, and although it might take more time, it also is expected to improve the quality of our forensic examinations.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #232629; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 32px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

It was a very well attended meeting with over 4200 participants and 600 international. There were many excellent papers presented and it is good to see the forensic science strengthening in the USA. As Vice president I was elected to Treasurer. I also received the Carrie Morgan Whitcomb award. Furthermore our section Digital and Multimedia Sciences organized several well attended workshop. Also as Chair of the think tank we saw many new developments that have impact on forensic science ranging from designer drugs to the dark net and drones as well as new mobile analytical techniques that are available on the crime scene. I presented two papers one on deep learning of video and one on video camera identification on social networks. Also I chaired the workshop on the leading edge of forensic science and gave a talk on digital and Multimedia services. The director of the NFI www.forensicinstitute.nl gave an excellent talk on reconnecting to forensic science and the plenary had much consensus on the near future.<br />
<br />
It was an excellent network opportunity and I met many colleagues.<br />

The lecture was at the University of Amsterdam for my special chair forensic data science, for 1 day a week. It was for me a very nice event, and my family, as well as many colleagues, friends and other attended it. I uploaded it also to my <a href="http://forensic.to/oratie">website</a><br />

Also I am happy that the special issue big data and intelligent data analysis of the journa<a href="http://www.journals.elsevier.com/digital-investigation/call-for-papers/special-issue-on-big-data-and-intelligent-data-analysis/">l Digital Investigation</a>, where Katrin Franke and I am guest editors is finished now, and it should be available soon. </div>

It is one of the actions to have more standards and validation of results in Digital Evidence. We can see some issues with digital evidence in this <a href="http://www.techrepublic.com/article/digital-forensics-resembles-the-wild-west-when-it-comes-to-regulation">article</a> with <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/19/us/19casey.html?_r=0">a case</a> to that standard software from the shelf led to the conclusion in court that the word chloroform was retrieved 84 times instead of 1 and the software designer reported this error. So validation of the results and the interpretation of digital evidence remains important.<br />
<br />
I also worked on some casework and had to testify in court. Currently also working on my inaugural lecture as professor in Amsterdam on forensic data science on 12 november 2015. As usual the deadlines of <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/calls/h2020-fct-2015.html">European projects</a> is also at the end of the summer on 28 August, so currently on two of them related to big data as a participant. <br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.eafs2015.eu/">EAFS</a> will be held in Prague and the Forensic IT working group which I am currently chairing will also meet for three days.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18163426157664213127noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7584897.post-45875675670453089692015-06-26T08:46:00.001-07:002015-06-26T08:46:58.207-07:00June 2015As usual June is busy before the holidays start. It can be seen on the number of cases that come in, as well as all management tasks that need to be finished. Proposals for restructuring the organisation are often also before the summer and of course new plans and proposals often have to be finished for August, so there is lots of work to do.<div>
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBkv_14QY5zQ4ui7xaslt-0gcI-29R5afeSB1iK_i5NrkKBanFjR2CD87nZwVi-tEkZFlOmW5quZjBQFwgkHg_9DwE08bu3Hxr5Cwox2fX9qwHOxGaz9KjABbelNZpC3boQsixYA/s1600/IMG_20150617_143542.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBkv_14QY5zQ4ui7xaslt-0gcI-29R5afeSB1iK_i5NrkKBanFjR2CD87nZwVi-tEkZFlOmW5quZjBQFwgkHg_9DwE08bu3Hxr5Cwox2fX9qwHOxGaz9KjABbelNZpC3boQsixYA/s320/IMG_20150617_143542.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Working during a 3 hour train travel to a presentation for Business Intelligence and Smart Services seminar </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have seen that the <a href="http://www.academia.edu/3215278/Exploring_UK_Law_Enforcement_Officers_Perceptions_in_Regards_to_the_CSI_Effect_">CSI-effect </a>had a major impact on expectations of forensic evidence and the speed of solving a case, since generally forensic examination takes time. The studies in Forensic Science, attracts many students, and we <a href="http://iis.uva.nl/en/news--events/componenten-midden/events/events/content/folder-4/2015/06/10-years-master-forensic-science.html">had the celebration of 10 year Master of Forensic Science</a> at the University of Amsterdam. One issue is that with current government cuts in many countries the number of jobs is limited. As we can see in the UK there are <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-31440038">some reports</a> that some of these cuts might cause serious mistakes in criminal cases. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This month also several meetings and interesting discussions also on codes of ethics. Also on the <a href="https://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.enfsi.eu%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fdocuments%2Fbylaws%2Fcode_of_conduct.pdf&ei=_FKNVav_G8OhsAH4moGICw&usg=AFQjCNEXFTSQop33UDt7tJfPJ9xPOkeY7A&sig2=qf31SvznlCwFW-80KTTqcg&bvm=bv.96782255,d.bGg">ENFSI </a>code of conduct and a derived code proposal from the <a href="https://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCEQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fenglish.nrgd.nl%2FImages%2Fcode-of-conduct-nrgd-en_tcm98-565617.pdf&ei=WFONVbChM4SfsgHI3JrICw&usg=AFQjCNEiOEmt87grazBV54QmCWOGJqSAzg&sig2=r_XRjirB3MjO5CIGHNRRgA&bvm=bv.96782255,d.bGg">Netherlands Register of Court Experts</a>. Most forensic <a href="http://aafs.org/about/aafs-bylaws/article-ii-code-ethics-and-conduct">organisations</a> (for example the AAFS) also have a similar codes, however for me it is not easy to determine if they might conflict with each other when agreeing with all the different codes,</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Also as program manager cyber forensics, big data and digital evidence, several presentations and new contacts also on new topics ranging from infrastructure of big data, to biometric spoofing and drones as well as processing large amounts of video in a forensic case. </div>

<span lang="EN-GB">It is another nice month with writing and finishing research proposals, reviewing articles, doing some casework and giving some lectures. Also looking into drone forensics, it appears more research is done in this area and it is expected that cases will come in. I was in Magdeburg and gave a keynote talk at the conference IMF 2015. The city of Magdeburg has many well maintained old buildings and appears to be green. Also good discussions during the meeting on interpretation of forensic evidence as well the appropriate use of Likelihood ratios in Forensic IT, as well as uncertainty and confidence levels which are becoming more used in forensic analysis software.</span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB">I also went for a steering committee in Prague to prepare our annual meeting of the Forensic IT working group during the <a href="http://www.eafs2015.eu/">EAFS 2015</a>. One of the goals is finishing the update of the Best Practice manual, and as always it is an issue if the manual does not become too detailed, however it there is excellent progress. It is also good to see new proficiency tests will be developed as well as our new ideas for R&D projects.</span></div>

There are many good contributions for the journal, and currently all submissions are processed.<br />
<br />
Also besides working on some casework, currently I have a student working on forensic traces in drones, since it appears that the number of drones for consumer sold is growing rapidly. There is not much research in this field yet related on forensics and traces that can be recovered after a crime happened, and as we saw at the <a href="http://www.aafs.org/">AAFS conference</a> in February two papers were presented there.<br />
<br />
It is good to see that open source software within the forensic community is more wider available, as we can see also at http://www.basistech.com/osdfcon-2015/ . It was suprising to see how easy the software is to install and use as we can see for example in <a href="http://www.sleuthkit.org/autopsy/">Autopsy by Brian Carrier.</a> Also the NFI developed open source software such as <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/defraser/">defraser</a>, for analysis and repair of video. Furthermore we see in <a href="http://openbiometrics.org/">biometrics also several approaches for open source software</a> which appear major enough to use for research.<br />
<br />
In May there is a conference of <a href="http://www1.gi-ev.de/fachbereiche/sicherheit/fg/sidar/imf/imf2015/contact.html">9th International Conference on </a><a href="http://www1.gi-ev.de/fachbereiche/sicherheit/fg/sidar/imf/imf2015/contact.html">IT Security Incident Management & IT Forensic</a>s in Magdeburg were I am preparing a keynote talk for. More research is see on investigation on malware and android forensics and upcoming research on private browsing software, such as <a href="http://alternativeto.net/software/tor/">Tor, I2P and many others</a> is expected.<br />
<br />

Furthermore the workshop of the Think Tank of the Forensic Science Foundation that I was chairing was sold out with a waiting list. New developments were presented ranging from wearables, biometric research in facial comparison, drones and multispectral imaging which might influence future forensic casework. Many new opportunities for research.<br />
<br />
In March the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB0QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dfrws.org%2F2015eu%2F&ei=O-fxVMzzCsTeU5lw&usg=AFQjCNGg87ucElX_d9wmokJnpQZ1Ealefw&sig2=G6NdTBwULLbJpc6ekZEmJA&bvm=bv.87269000,d.d24">DFRWS will have its conference in Dublin</a>, which has a good program.Of course I also will do some casework and some lecturing,which both are also very nice to do and combine with research in the field. In the lab several student trainees that are doing research on camera identification, vein comparison, soft biometrics as well forensic drone examination, to find relevant digital traces and e-glasses.<br />

When I look back on this month, we had a very good meeting in Tallinn, Estonia for our <a href="http://www.enfsi.eu/">ENFSI IT Working group</a>. Investigation methods on forensic data science as well as methods for digital investigation are worthwhile exploring.<br />

As program manager big data and cyber forensics we see many new challenges coming in. The variety of devices is growing each day, and of course many new forensic products are developed. Also attention on devices such as smart TVs, drones, medical devices even robot vacuum cleaners with many sensors that store data are of interest to the forensic community.<br />
<br />
In the week of 18 November we have the yearly <a href="http://www.enfsi.eu/agenda/enfsi-forensic-it-working-group-meeting">ENFSI Forensic IT Working group</a> in Tallinn, Estonia. As chairman of this working group, I am looking forward to the presentations and the collaboration with CEPOL. I hope there will be some results of collaborative exercises also. One of the documents that is of interest how to include Bayesian conclusions in the Forensic IT working group. Discussions include how to determine the Likehood Ratio and how to determine priors in more complex crime scenes. Validation and testing of forensic software and <a href="http://scholar.google.nl/scholar_url?hl=en&q=https://utica.edu/academic/institutes/ecii/publications/articles/A0472DF7-ADC9-7FDE-C80B5E5B306A85C4.pdf&sa=X&scisig=AAGBfm0w3lIFVhD0ABC-6SO5Vmd7v5bZJQ&oi=scholarr&ei=ExNmVKiPE5PvauLAgKgM&ved=0CB8QgAMoADAA">error, uncertainty and loss in digital evidence</a> remain topics for discussion.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18163426157664213127noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7584897.post-61917823694354318092014-10-21T11:28:00.001-07:002014-10-21T11:28:39.591-07:00October 2014<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikvaDi5MzIPFgL89UeZI3cf7AY3h3Fs1U1ZJtGnClYQ-2pQcWXgBV3417an5tNJNbt_W_gzCC-Xqn3EtigW067NidCCYpAmiV4aoAY7Qn1R_B7FSJ5cKIRRiD5TzebGYujD_tBRg/s1600/Clipboard01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikvaDi5MzIPFgL89UeZI3cf7AY3h3Fs1U1ZJtGnClYQ-2pQcWXgBV3417an5tNJNbt_W_gzCC-Xqn3EtigW067NidCCYpAmiV4aoAY7Qn1R_B7FSJ5cKIRRiD5TzebGYujD_tBRg/s1600/Clipboard01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikvaDi5MzIPFgL89UeZI3cf7AY3h3Fs1U1ZJtGnClYQ-2pQcWXgBV3417an5tNJNbt_W_gzCC-Xqn3EtigW067NidCCYpAmiV4aoAY7Qn1R_B7FSJ5cKIRRiD5TzebGYujD_tBRg/s1600/Clipboard01.jpg" height="356" width="640" /></a><br />

The words that I use most often in this blog are visualised in this picture<br />
<br />
This month the olympic games of forensic sciences as <a href="http://www.wff2014korea.org/">IAFS</a> calls themselves was held in Seoul, Korea. Many good presentations and a good networking opportunity. This time I gave a presentation on forensic multimedia analytics at the AAFS-session. It was very well organized, and of course I used the opportunity to buy a Korean smartphone.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.spui25.nl/programma/content/lezingen/2014/10/21.10.14---ed-forensische-wetenschap-en-informatie.html">Spui 25 in Amsterdam</a> organized a debate on big data and forensic science (I was one of the persons on the panel), where also the privacy aspects of investigation where discussed with <a href="https://www.bof.nl/home/english-bits-of-freedom/">bits of Freedom</a>.<br />

For the ENFSI Forensic IT Working group we were working on updating the <a href="http://www.enfsi.eu/about-enfsi/structure/working-groups/information-technology">best practice guide</a>. Nice discussions about forensic validation of software. The issue with a generic validation is that it takes a long time since software develops in the mean time, as we can see with the <a href="http://www.cftt.nist.gov/">NIST</a> computer forensic tool program, which is very useful for the methodology and results .<br />
<br />
For that reason within the quality system to do also a validation per case (and of course methods that NIST uses can be used to assist this). It is also good to see that Digital Evidence in the United States also has a <a href="http://www.nist.gov/forensics/forensics-090814.cfm">OSAC</a> (Organization of Scientific Area Committee).<br />
<br />
For <a href="http://www.enfsi.eu/agenda/forensic-information-technology-fit-working-group-annual-meeting-2014">ENFSI</a> I am also looking forward to the meeting in Tallinn in November, partly combined with <a href="https://www.cepol.europa.eu/">CEPOL</a>. Also in October the IAFS is having its meeting in Seoul, so I will give a short paper on digital and multimedia sciences.<br />
<br />
In the meantime <a href="http://www.dfrws.org/2015eu/">DFRWS EU version in Dublin </a>is approaching, and it is good to see that there appear to be many submissions.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18163426157664213127noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7584897.post-69681410622819061692014-08-22T01:51:00.001-07:002014-08-22T01:51:36.247-07:00August 2014<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEia03nKNMFxZafc8w7N15j9u4at_9rgp-Uio3TZtPvIDxOBItcjxY2Zw9igDVhVltCNqPL4ZbD5bciXgYZurEs2h8-_oNgupVY_JefOmwgB8onu8xjGRsz-9P0ivZJKePlf-2fQapYIoJZhclrOy_E_y5VdvaXzc192=" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Magazine Cover" border="0" src="http://spectrum.ieee.org/img/08Cover_300x400-1406139745290.jpg" /></a>This month had a wide variety of tasks from casework to administrative tasks. A short vacation and some more work on writing project proposals as well as working on several methods. Just looking to new developments on <a href="http://hortonworks.com/blog/apache-storm-real-time-processing-hadoop/">big data and using real time processing with Hadoop</a> . Of course when talking about big data, privacy issues should also be mentioned. Currently we are working on a call for papers on <a href="http://www.journals.elsevier.com/digital-investigation/">big data and intelligent data analysis </a>in the journal Digital Investigation.<a href="http://spectrum.ieee.org/computing/software/browser-fingerprinting-and-the-onlinetracking-arms-race">The IEEE Spectrum magazine even has written an article on the collapse of internet privacy.</a>,<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Also busy with reviewing best practice guides for ENFSI on Digital Imaging and on Forensic IT. Interesting discussions on validating software in ISO 17025 and testing the software.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
New developments for me are that I am appointed per September 1st for one day a week as professor at the University of Amsterdam in Forensic Data Sciences by special appointment at the Informatics Institute. Also I am honored to be nominated as vice president at the <a href="https://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CDcQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aafs.org%2Fnews%2Facademy-news-july-2014-vol-44-issue-4&ei=Lkr2U63hKqHIyAOM6ILIDg&usg=AFQjCNH40SKW27_aJ_bnL7j-3mXf8zuF3w&sig2=CzaJKigMHEko9o1mLEUHSA&bvm=bv.73373277,d.bGQ">American Academy of Forensic Science</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The next <a href="http://www.dfrws.org/2015eu/">DFRWS-EU conference will be held in Dublin </a>from 23 to 26 March 2015, so the call for papers is ready now.</div>

Several thoughts on forensic science in a few years also with the Theoretical Forensic Science (aka Think Tank) of the <a href="http://fsf.aafs.org/">Forensic Science Foundation</a> where of course the topics such as nanotechnology, programmable matter, 3D printing, aspects of cybercrime on wearable devices, drone forensics and many opportunities which might impact forensic science as such are discussed and a workshop is proposed. There are several<a href="http://fsf.aafs.org/grants_scholarships/grants-scholarships"> grants, scholarschips and awards </a>available for research in forensic science, within the Forensic Science Foundation, and of course one can also <a href="http://fsf.aafs.org/contribute">contribute on line</a>.<br />
<br />
It appears infographics work much better than words often, so Elice Cooper asked me to include the forensic nursing infographics this time.<br />

<br />
Furthermore this month I went to a meeting of the project <a href="http://assert-project.eu/masterclass-in-societal-security/">ASSERT</a> on social impact analysis where challenging forensic projects were discussed. Many interesting discussions on ethical and social issues within these projects.<br />
<br />
Also I have a guest lecture at the University of Amsterdam, in the<a href="http://assert-project.eu/masterclass-in-societal-security/"> track Cybercrime and security</a>, where we also have several projects proposals submitted. <br />

Currently we see more publications within the forensic literature, for example <a href="https://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CC4QFjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ncjrs.gov%2Fpdffiles1%2Fnij%2Fgrants%2F228091.pdf&ei=_AVBU_7WLYqBywPTwIDQAw&usg=AFQjCNGplEj5Xr1S259Nf_Zou72hk2onVg&sig2=WkMfB-THks_wL2GMygwhbg&bvm=bv.64125504,d.bGQ">Christensen et.al.</a> urges that forensic scientists clearly communicate the different type of errors in forensic science such as :<br />
- measurement uncertainties<br />
- variations<br />
- interobserver errors<br />
- mistakes<br />
<br />
Also different labs report on their website on these errors. Also Ate Kloosterman and colleagues discussed methods of reporting the errors in a workshop at the <a href="http://www.aafs.org/">American Academy of Forensic Science in 2014</a>.<br />
<br />
Currently I also have projects that students work on, ranging from forensic implications of 3D-printers, to camera identification, stego-analysis and forensic feet comparison, and of course some casework were I work on. In quiet periods I do most casework, and currently some on camera identification. As program manager of Forensic Big Data and Intelligent Data Analysis it is good to see that much research within this field is going on.
